Illinois Requires Public Schools To Recite The Pledge Of Allegiance
Something you all may or may not know: In the state of Illinois, schools are required to display the U.S. flag and Illinois Compiled Statutes 105 ILCS 5 School Code. Section 27-3 says, "The Pledge of Allegiance shall be recited each school day by pupils in elementary and secondary educational institutions supported or maintained in whole or in part by public funds." The law also allows for religious exclusion (those children opting out are to stand off to the side respectfully during the Pledge), requires instruction in the use and care of the U.S. flag, and specifies the time allotted during the school day that the Pledge is supposed to be recited (last year Galatia Grade School recited the Pledge over the intercoms each morning at the same time. Pre-K also stood, held their hands over their hearts, and recited along.
